![]() Its a great place to see sea birds, boats of various types and a piece of area history. ![]() ![]() The surface is a blue stone chip and is easy to walk or ride a bike on. Currently a little less than a mile is complete. You enter the trail currently at either its current southern end, near Atlantic Ave, DE Rte 26, by cutting accross the Juice Box Cafe's lot, they don't mind in fact they have a sign up welcoming visitors or you can enter at Central Ave at the bridge by the canal. ![]() While it still has much further to go the first two sections are open to the public. Till now the only way to travel it was by water but a few years ago the state announced they would create a parallel trail. In 1968 the Feds gave the canal to the state of Delaware. Once part of the Intercoastal water way it was abandoned by the Corp of Engineers some time in the first half of the 20th century. This body of water connects the Indian River Bay with Assawoman Bay. Black and red mangroves line the trail in areas where it passes through marine tidal swamp.Įach trail is unique and takes hikers through the hidden wild areas and rich ecosystems of the park.I am a fairly frequent kayaker on the Assawoman Canal. The Eagle Trail brings walkers through maritime hammock dominated by cabbage palms, Jamaica dogwoods, strangler figs, gumbo limbos, cat claws, buttonwoods and seagrapes. This area is especially important for wading birds and shorebirds - the mollusks and crustaceans that live in the underwater muck are a vital part of their diet. Imperiled species that frequent this area include the bald eagle, West Indian manatee, American alligator and the crested caracara. Originally, the land here was intended to be a residential neighborhood. Instead, it’s home to manatees and a great variety of coastal birds, fish, insects and reptiles. It follows estuaries and canals that were dredged to make way for development on the island. ![]() There is a reason for the strange shape of the trail. The trail is made up of two long loops connected by a wide dirt service road and is 5 miles in length. The Black Island Trail at Lovers Key State Park is unique in the state and offers a view into secluded estuaries full of wildlife. ![]()
